Chapter 7

“Are you ready, babe?“ I asked my husband, sashaying into our bedroom.

He was in front of the mirror, smoothing his elegant suit, seeming lost in his thoughts.

“Yeah ... it’s just ... are you sure you want us to go?“

I sighed and bit my tongue, not wanting to say something that could hurt him. I loved him, but Jack had been driving me crazy more than usual in the last few weeks, and I had started to get tired of always being the one to cheer him up and encourage.

“Babe, it’s the company party, a lot of clients will be there. It’s a good chance to network, you know this. Let people meet you - the person behind the task, it will help you in your career.“

“Yeah, but I’m tired, and Zane will be there, too.“

“C’mon, let him be, I’m sure he’ll be too busy talking to clients to even look at you or at any of us.“

My husband turned around and stared at me, a surge of annoyance coursing through his eyes.

“Trust Zane to find the time to humiliate me in front of people. You saw how he is, Elsie.“

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, tired of all of this shit.

“If you don’t want to come, then don’t. I want to be there, Jack, but you can do whatever you want,“ I said, turning around and walking out of the room.

I wasn’t being fair, I knew that, but I was just too tired of using my energy to build him up again and again.

In the last few weeks, I had finished a lot of big tasks for some high-end clients. Those projects had brought both them and our company a lot of money, so I knew it would help me to meet the clients in person.

Jack knew that, I had told him, but instead of rooting at least once for me or congratulating me on my job, he continued to drown himself in his fears and focus on himself.

“Wait, Elsie, I’m coming, too,“ he mumbled behind me.

He muttered something about Zane on his way to the car, but I didn’t bother listening. Especially since it kind of started to annoy me to hear him criticizing my lover.

I mean yeah, he was far from being perfect, but he wasn’t the horrible monster Jack insisted on painting him as... at least not for me ... not anymore ...

Fuck it!

No, this was a party, and I was going to have fun and talk to the clients, no matter what Jack, Zane, or anyone else was doing.

Half an hour later, my husband was parking in front of the company building. I glanced at him as we walked inside, and my heart sank at seeing how tense he was.

“It will be alright, babe,“ I whispered, inching closer to him and moving my palm on his arm.

“Yeah, whatever,“ he muttered, shaking himself free of my touch.

I swallowed hard and looked away, leaving him alone. Fine, if he wanted to be grumpy for the rest of the night, so be it.
